Birkhoff equation

By: Jorge Márquez / / skizofreniko_8@hotmail.com

The study of beauty as a quality of objects was revived in a modern approach in 1928 when the American mathematician George David Birkhoff presented his often cited equation:

Aesthetic Value = (order quantity) / (product complexity)

The last two elements in the equation can Birkhoff be easily measured, at least in a rudimentary level. Birkhoff himself tested the equation by designing a vessel that had great value of beauty in his opinion because only a very limited number of elements (only 3 different curves) were needed to create a highly consistent results.

Birkhoff's method has been applied to a coffee pot made in the factory Rosenthal. This coffee consists of several dozens of pictorial elements, with what Birkhoff probably find less than its aesthetic beauty of his own creation.
The following decades saw, mainly in Germany, a long series of studies in which researchers standards met by the meeting of simple components, measuring their complexity and systematic they were, and examined the extent to which these pictures were beautiful individuals who participated in the test. However, these investigations were not very successful. Few people found simple figures beautiful, and in regard to real art, it is difficult to measure the parameters of Birkhoff in them. Today, mainstream research tends to see the beauty not as a property of objects, but either as a sensation related to perception, or alternatively as a message. Paradigm both documents will be discussed later.

In my opinion the single components will be named for not having a complexity of form within an object, even Birkhoff says that using more complex the shape is more possess aesthetic value, but sometimes simplicity does not give beauty for many people, because it gives the beauty of an object using a perceptual feeling totally subjective.

The primacy of spirit over the most beautiful architecture

By: Anthony Cabrera / / evolution_007_4@hotmail.com

While the architecture is the set of modifications and alterations made in the earth's surface in order to meet the needs human, in ancient architecture is said to be based on three principles: Beauty (venusta), Firmness (Firmitas) and Utility (Utilitas). The architecture can be defined, then, as a balance between these three elements, without exceeding any other. It would be pointless trying to understand a work of architecture without taking these three aspects.

also currently have few ways of architectural beauty, as Van de Velde, the line is a force that is felt in the lines that define the configuration of the objects the manifestation of the vitality that we attribute or ultimately, our own life objectified in them. From there, the artwork must include the assertion that life force by making explicit the power-lines, its emphasis and distinction. Then the line expresses our energy in everything we set out to do, is an abstract decoration, she acts on any unless you have some feeling by the way, the relationships between length and induced accents while being drawn. Is somehow an essential element in the architecture as it helps to change any pattern, just as we have the ornament that uses elements capable of acting in turn on the way, is the extension and recognize the meaning and justification of the decorative element in its function, but this function is to structure the form and not to adorn as you tend to think.

Now to give a brief introduction to the aesthetic that we explain that according to Hegel, art forms, special arts and, specifically, the architecture, are the result of the dialectic established between form and content the two aspects that art must reconcile. The art, therefore, is seen as one way that presents a general proviso becoming a precise sense of an inner necessity that leads to continued progress. With this piece is to raise awareness that art develops, then, as a world, the content, the goal itself, is represented by the beautiful, and the true meaning of beauty is none other than the spirit. Thus the highest degree of art is the religion which is a direct relationship, as in religion stands outside life, land, finite, art is moving in the exterior. The first realization of art is represented by the architecture when you make a perfect match between the content and form, leaving the boundaries of their own domain to enter another is higher than that of the sculpture, its task is to print to inorganic nature transformations, by the magic of art, close to the spirit; materials are being provided by the gross foreign matter in the form of masses and heavy mechanical. Thus the sculpture represents the spirit in bodily form, as an immediate unity, in its state of serene calm and happy, also like the architecture uses heavy materials in whole space, without therefore on the whole organic and inorganic forms. As mentioned we can say that the visual arts (architecture and sculpture) give way to the aesthetic that is a branch of philosophy that studies the meaning of beauty, also deals with the nature of art and judgments about creation and appreciation of the artistic work. Well The term aesthetics is the Latin termination "ico" which means on, then it is understood that the word is relative to aesthetic beauty, or something beautiful. It is part of the artistic question that is responsible for evaluating and analyzing art using a method of visual communication. As is evident these arts have a strong relationship with aesthetics.

To conclude, how they influence the aesthetic and architectural beauty formulas of modern architecture? largely because they do influence as mentioned. A formula of modern beauty is the line-force through it our energy expresses and helps to change patterns, then they have a lot to do with architecture because what is sought in any work of art is beauty, firmness, and so the aesthetic is a very important decision since it also has the same end; in this way and call these elements are an essential part of architecture, in other words have great influence them because they have achieved the beauty in every work of art and human needs that every day are more demanding because all forms of arrangements, developments that arise over time.

Within the world of architecture, known as a world exclusive for only a few connoisseurs and art critics beauty is becoming more rare and mostly takes different forms in architecture called pop apparently a sculpture than a building but this is due to the conceptualization of natural forms, the camouflage of perfection but projected a perverse way that many like him but do not understand, only see it but not watch it, but subconsciously intent of the architect is another, and ordinary people or rather the people who are not familiar with the principles and forms in architecture do not stop to perceive it should be and in contradiction to this are the critics who say that we lose the essence of architecture or others feel great if we speak of a clear project which is the''pop Guggenheim by Frank Gehry''a visible example - but also even more conceptual - is taken to an extreme that even they know what they need these forms: a kind of fate or perhaps intent "casual" to build different things when the real beauty lies in improving what already exists not corrupt and make it unintelligible to many. That is what architecture is becoming a very exclusive art for some artists considered but more like social malcontents and who think that art is different or an extreme form. In my opinion, the art goes beyond a simple mash and painted wall jet without pattern or meaning. The beauty lies in the intention, the simple way that through a painting, drawing, sketch, speak for itself: Graphic communicate without words or perhaps in other arts such as music through a melody , convey different feelings and perceived change something else and - although the peculiarity of the architecture is that work on space and so we can do it in a different magnificent and beautiful without actually destroying it - space is something that not many contemporary architects take into account . Do not claim that their works are evil but is hard to grasp that one wants to understand an architectural feat when their creators did not know their origin. Perhaps, as Frank Gehry said:''in the trash you do not know how many spaces and many different textures can be

With ...''

step is to talk about words of inspiration - almost absurd - and not so much talking about architecture, if not of other arts such as sculpture or painting to today for example in France there is a section where artists express themselves as they want but in a confused manner. I once read in a leading Peruvian newspaper about a Japanese artist where art means something very personal, as well as carrying head lice and if we compare it with the architecture so beautiful as capricious, and supposedly trying to sort out the chaos in a composition. Although many have done so magnificently, some are so vain that endure over time and this is also another objective of the architecture: transcend through time. Not many get to that point.

Now the concept and architectural beauty has changed, or perhaps has been lost in time, since it is an art and is adapted to the historical context, this has been good or bad for the evolution of architecture. The good news is that the essence is never going to lose, the bad thing is that there is no universal concept of art and architecture and this is due to the eclecticism of our era. If we go back to the Renaissance time illumination and inspiration, one of its representatives: Leonardo Da Vinci, took natural forms, the studying and conceptualized and obtained large machines or beautiful artistic compositions that even today are still discovering new things about them, something most current, Picasso, a teacher before making abstract art known natural forms, an excellent realistic, so if we compare with the architecture many forget the basic principles, natural laws, perfection as I mentioned.

In conclusion, the art and beauty have changed a couple times well and sometimes we have become evil. What we can do is not become boring or copyists. Vain to ignore the thought of beauty as a pointless quest of man to the difficulty of thinking about it is stagnant. The output is to rediscover the perfection of our nature to do and, if possible, overcome.

Architecture, invent and re invent

By: Gustavo Espinoza / / tavo301@hotmail.com

have been studying, throughout history, concluding that the architecture is part of the processes that accompany the development and evolution of society, in all branches of architecture, from its definition and conceptualization of their compositional elements such as aesthetics.

They manifest themselves in many ways, both as a necessity and as an integral vision, focusing on the architecture features of a service, such as suggested by Durand. He gives us an idea of \u200b\u200bhow the architecture is based on each specific detail, without leaving aside the idea that the text was made for a military court seeking efficiency and speed in teaching to military engineering.

Composing and performing arts are framing the architecture, as the text begins, there are two words that complement, is the process that follows one after other. Composing is the abstract, an idea in mind and sketches done in strokes, because once taking the whole idea can be done, build.

This phase between these two verbs is called process.

Durand tells us what can and should be the architecture, describing every detail of the architectural process.

first presents a goal, where architecture should go, or what they should have the architectural work, which is the convenience and minimum cost.

Convenience is the increased productivity, convenience, which should meet the building with the least possible expense, can be summarized in a minimum effort and maximum impact, so that the architecture can be considered efficient, good in itself.

The process must be approached in a holistic manner and not by isolating ideas, as this will lose the link between them and not form their union and complement, only scattered ideas. This process should be taken from the teaching of architecture, taking a generic approach that also opposes the specific, try searching for an architect to design the overall architecture.

Take it as a whole, means that not only is that it is drawn up or strokes, but to develop and implement the idea, must have been thinking all materials, taking as a basis for architectural expression, with the characteristics of the material that defines the shapes, proportions, climate and environment for use.

This is how Durand, suggests the complexity of the architecture, which not only gives ideas, but also explains how the writing goes back a sum of parts that eventually form the architecture, but at a time is taken as a whole, how the building is made taking into account the combination of materials and everything that makes up.

Although Durand sponsors a development of architecture, where efficiency (convenience and minimum cost) is the paradigm to follow, the abuse of this rule on industrial revolution did nothing to commercialize the role of architecture. Ideas such as Allison, pose a largely abstract question: "What is the source of sublimity and beauty of the material world?". Allison attempts to find an answer that is absorbed into a reality where the sale determines the way forward in architecture. Allison based his response on that matter expressed material and mental qualities, the latter as ideas from the individual as a result of the experience. All this is tainted by the industrial revolution. The effect aesthetic perception, the use of a certain matter, it becomes a way of determining a material for a sense, a style or a particular purpose. Another
Semper was trying to explain, better defined chaotic path which leads to the industrial revolution. He says that he turned aside aesthetics of technology, because technology sought to be more systematic and aesthetic pleasure is to seek the ways and why. Still, Semper not lose faith in it and claims that the science of art seeks to harmonize the new functional and formal requirements generated in the nineteenth century.

He notes the contradictions been dragging the design, because they begin to create items, and things that went hand in hand with your materials or work together. Just as gas lighting candles in the shape of where the function is completely independent from its form, seems absurd. Also emphasizes the use of granite in situations where it is unnecessary to put being a hard material. Semper
hopes of technological advance, is amazed by the technological advances, and believes he is part of a process within the science of art. These new achievements, they also put into question the materials such as granite - hard stuff - is subordinate to a machine that can polish it and shape it without much difficulty.
Durand, Semper Allison and we suggest that the architecture as a craft and process, is exposed to many variables that can greatly affect the development or course of action. Everything must be balanced and take into account one thing or another in the process should be, perhaps not in equal proportion but if intended for use to be given.

For example, the conception of architecture led in one direction, more consistent, can produce a reverse effect. The Treaty of Durand and his way of thinking about architecture not only helped in the development and building development projects, but also systematically summarized what all covered, with the market - promoted by the industrial revolution and consumer capitalism - something digestible voracious receptors as a systematic and simplified architecture. While the systematic
helps streamline the processes of architecture as a profession, it seems appropriate to reduce the process architecture. It must maintain its critical role and human, especially today where computer technology and processes allow for super speed, while self-generating processes and, if the architecture is relegated to the systematization, the architect and the office itself would easily replaced by the ability of models that can generate a computer.
This may not sound as optimistic as the vision of Semper, but consider that his vision could be utopian for today. He could not see the disasters that were made due to technological progress: the massive annihilation in the two world wars, the atomic bomb, the Cold War, the genetic experiments and global warming. All these developments have had on humanity with a critical view of technological progress. Semper watched the steady progress as a paradigm to follow which could not be disastrous, he tries to minimize the contradictions of progress, assuming that somehow "natural" be corrected by the science - as part of progress - and the evolution of the science of art.

closing, one could say that architecture is always going to be linked to the development of society, the changes it undergoes and how he takes a critical and humane, that different concepts can be generated on it so varied and contradictory as people and situations in the world, that despite these changes and directions that may emphasize - and persuade - in society, the architecture must maintain a critical role to assert constantly reinventing itself and survive as a discipline that seeks to satisfy the demands of man in particular and in community.

All these changes demonstrate how technology can be useful without neglecting aesthetics and perception.
